The UW-Whitewater College of Arts and Communication is sponsoring the 4th Annual Creative Enterprise Symposium from 1:30 - 3:30 pm, held in the Fern Young Terrace of Young Auditorium on February 25, 2015. With a theme of Planting the Seeds for Creative Enterprise, the Symposium intends to engage both students and the community in conversations about creative enterprise, diversity and growing a healthy community. The day features three professionals with careers in both academics and creative enterprise. ?The Symposium is designed to engage students and the community with professionals who embody the spirit of creative enterprise, states Megan Matthews, Creative Enterprise Symposium coordinator. We are excited to bring these individuals together to share their expertise; our goal is to showcase creatives and artists who are making their dreams of Creative Enterprise a reality locally and globally. Speakers include: Dr. Kishonna Gray, Director of the Critical Gaming Lab and Asst. Professor in the School of Justice Studies, Women & Gender Studies, and Africa/African-American Studies at Eastern Kentucky University, and author of Race, Gender, & Deviance in Xbox Live; Dr. Maria Dixon, Assoc. Professor of Organizational Communication, Director of Communication Studies, and adjunct associate professor of Homileitics at Southern Methodist University; and Mutope J. Johnson, UW-Whitewater BFA 78, a professional Milwaukee-based visual artist with many years experience in the design communication fields, and a strong interest in using art to foster urban renewal. Mr. Johnson holds an MFA from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee's Peck School of the Arts. Creative industries are organizations, individuals and companies whose products and services originate in artistic, cultural, creative and/or aesthetic content they include nonprofit arts and culture organizations, for-profit creative businesses and sole proprietor creatives all of whom create, produce and distribute creative products. For the 2015 Symposium, each panelist brings a unique perspective that combines creative enterprise, social justice, community building and citizenship and communicating these ideas through their artistic and creative endeavors. About the Creative Enterprise Symposium Planting the Seeds for Creative Enterprise will consist of three professional development components. During the morning, speakers will visit classrooms at UW-Whitewater to share their work and personal experience in the creative industries. From 1:30 - 3:30 pm, speakers will participate in the Symposium in the Fern Young Terrace of Young Auditorium, where they will share their experiences and thoughts about creative enterprise and diversity in the field; the session will end with a Q & A. After the panel there will be a reception from 3:30 - 4:30 pm, in the Fern Young Terrace. The symposium and reception are free, and open to the public.
