Description
Hmong began coming to the United States in May 1975. According to the 2020 Census, there are 54,641 Hmong in Wisconsin, making Wisconsin the state with the third largest Hmong population in the United States after Minnesota and California. Hmong represents thirty-eight percent (38%) of Asians in Wisconsin, making them also the largest Asian group in the state. Despite the long history of Hmong resettlement in Wisconsin and the formation of large Hmong communities in La Crosse, Sheboygan, Green Bay, Wausau, Madison, and Milwaukee, many educators, policymakers, and individuals in Wisconsin still have not heard of the Hmong or known much about them. This talk provides an overview of Hmong American history with an emphasis on the key events and policies that shaped their immigration to Wisconsin and their incredible achievements since their initial arrival as well as their ongoing struggle for integration and acceptance as residents and citizens in the state.
Presented by Nengher Vang, Associate Professor, History
