Disability Representation in Children's and Young Adult Literature
"Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection, we can see our own lives and experiences as part of a larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books." Drawing from this quote by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, this lecture will provide families, teachers, and students with recommendations of children's and young adult literature featuring characters with disabilities. Including diverse representations in text is an important component of equity and inclusion, and ultimately serves to build a more just society. Join us to learn about selecting texts with diverse representation and free resources to access high-quality children's and young adult literature.
