262-472-1003 Bilingual Education and School Privatization in Milwaukee In the 1960s, Latinx people struggled to transform public schooling in Milwaukee, WI by advocating for bilingual-bicultural education in Spanish and English. Their efforts led to the creation of one of the United States’ first districtwide Spanish/English bilingual education programs. Yet in the past 30 years, growing numbers of charter and voucher schools in the city have emphasized instruction only in English. This presentation explores the complex histories of bilingual education activism and school privatization in Milwaukee.
