Roberta’s Art Gallery’s “Facing Addiction” exhibit features portraits of faces of individuals who have wrestled with addiction. The artist Paul Smith struggled with addiction earlier in his life and passed away from cancer this year. The exhibit also features a portrait of Sam Moermond, a student admitted to Whitewater in the class of 2023, who recovered from addiction and helped others recover, but who ultimately died during a relapse. In Sam’s honor, a scholarship for Whitewater students facing similar challenges has been established: The Sam Moermond Second Chance Scholarship. The exhibit was done in the memory of Sam and Paul and aims to increase awareness that addiction can affect people of all walks of life. *This exhibit may be triggering to some viewers* The “Facing Addiction” exhibit will be available to view in-person at the gallery and virtually on the gallery's website from November 3 - 23.
